Asbestos abatement means identifying, containing, and removing asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from a building. Asbestos is a mineral fiber once prized for its heat resistance and strength, so builders used it heavily through much of the 20th century. The material itself sits inert until disturbed. Once fibers become airborne and get inhaled, they pose a real health risk. Abatement removes that risk.

Inhaled asbestos fibers lodge deep in lung tissue. They don’t break down or pass through the body. Over years, they scar and inflame lung tissue, and that damage shows up as:

• Asbestosis: scarring that causes shortness of breath and chronic coughing.
• Lung cancer: asbestos exposure is a confirmed and significant risk factor.
• Mesothelioma: a rare cancer affecting the lining of the lungs, chest, or abdomen, almost always tied to asbestos exposure.
